With the cost of heating rising each year, it’s important to find ways to cut down on your heating bill. The past few months have been especially rough. In December, the price of natural gas was 47% higher than it was a year ago!
At CK Mechanical, we know how tough those rising costs can be. In Erie County, temperatures are regularly below freezing, and lake-effect snow all but shuts down cities like Port Clinton and Sandusky. We’d like to share a few cost-saving tips to help cut down those heating bills.
Cover Your Windows
The Department of Energy says about 30% of a home’s heating energy is lost through windows. By using energy-efficient window covers, or even window wrap, you can keep some of that heat inside. However, don’t forget to open the windows that get direct sunlight!
Seal any Air Leaks
Sealing air leaks can save a homeowner as much as 15 percent of their heating and cooling costs, according to energystar.gov. Adding weatherstripping to doors and windows, gaskets to outlets and light switches, and air sealing your attic and/or basement are all great ways to lower your heating bills.
Check Your Duct Work
Energy Star also tells us that about 20 to 30 percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. Many homeowners try to tackle this themselves, but don’t always get the same results. CK Mechanical can make sure that the connections at vents and registers are well-sealed where they meet the floors, walls, and ceiling, as well as repair any holes or cracks.
Service your Appliances
Furnaces and air conditioners need yearly maintenance to perform at their best capacity – meaning a dirty HVAC system can negatively affect your heating and cooling bills all year long. Additionally, maintaining your furnace and air conditioner yearly will extend the life of your system and prevent breakdowns, saving you money in the long run!
Use a Programmable Thermostat
One of the easiest ways to save on heating costs is, well… to use less heat! Programmable thermostats make it easy to set a lower temperature while sleeping or at work. A study by Mississippi State University found that programmable thermostats can save the average homeowner 10 percent of their annual heating and cooling bills.
By taking these steps, you can keep warm without breaking the bank. Have some more questions, or want to get a professional opinion? CK Mechanical is your one-stop shop for all housing repairs. We’d be happy to help!
